In the heart of the captivating rolling hills, lived a young shepherd. His existence was mostly unadulterated, simple yet virtuous. His primary duty was to tend to his flock of sheep.
Their soft bleating and the rustling of the breezes across the single tree on the peak were his constant companions. Day after day, guarding his charges imbued in him a notion of calm satisfaction.
However, there were occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would long for company. On one such day because of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous plan.
Stories of wild beasts prowling on sheep had been around for a while in the hamlet. So, the boy decided to used this fear and played a trick on the townsfolk.
One morning he ran into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf here attacking my sheep!” The scared villagers sprinted up the hills to offer assistance but saw nothing threatening.
The boy giggled at the dilemma on their faces. This prank continued for a few days more. Yet, one noon, a real wolf did come to prey the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy dashed for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he went back to the town only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the results of crying wolf.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the significance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses how trust once violated, is hard to regain. It's a story as relevant today as it was anciently.
